LPI (Language Proficiency Index)

Students receive several lessons and homework assignments on basic Canadian English grammar and usage.  Since the first two sections of the LPI involve the identification of a number of specific errors, students are taught how to identify these errors by working on a large number of sample questions and practice tests.

There are also several lessons focused on the reading comprehension section.  For this, students are taught specific strategies that guarantee good test results.  In particular, the students will learn summary-writing and critical reading skills.  Students will also receive individual attention and feedback from instructors on their specific areas of weakness.

The final section of the LPI involves the writing of an original essay.  This section alone makes up one half of the overall LPI score, so it is by far the most important part.  As such, several hours of instruction are devoted to learning strategies for writing a winning essay. The students receive essay topics each class, and they are required to submit a completed essay on the same day.  Here again, individual attention is provided, including suggestions and exercises geared towards improving the students’ writing.
