As stated in ETS (Educational Testing Service) TOEFL iBT Tips booklet, “The TOEFL iBT test measures a test taker’s ability to communicate ideas in an academic setting. It also helps to confirm their readiness to participate in academic coursework and campus life.” (p. 41).

At first glance, it seems that the TOEFL iBT has been designed only to test a student’s English language skills. This is not quite the case, however. A careful examination of the questions reveals that the TOEFL iBT also tests the cognitive skills typically required of post-secondary level students. Therefore, VGC conducted a thorough analysis of the TOEFL iBT test questions before developing and launching its specialized TOEFL iBT test preparation courses. The result is a two-pronged approach: to help students improve their command of all English language skills required of a college or university level student, and to teach TOEFL test-taking strategies, which, not coincidentally, happens to be the very cognitive skills they need to succeed in any Canadian or American college or university.
